Morning Glory Retreat
We always say that a trusting client and constraints are what bring about the most inspiring projects. In the picturesque landscape of Fenneville Michigan, nestled between the shimmering waters of Lake Michigan and the embrace of a protected wetland, sits Morning Glory—a getaway home that defies convention and celebrates the raw beauty of its surroundings. As you approach this environment, we were immediately struck by its need to be seamlessly integrated with nature and the opportunity for thoughtful design and innovative problem-solving.
Challenges Turned Opportunities
Morning Glory's unique location presented a host of challenges, from limited access to utilities to the delicate ecosystem it inhabits. However, rather than viewing these constraints as obstacles, we saw them as opportunities for creativity and ingenuity. With carefully planned utilities Morning Glory became a model of sustainable living in a remote setting. One of the most remarkable features of Morning Glory is its adaptability. With encroaching erosion on the lakeward side, the structure was required to be readily moveable as defined by Michigan’s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). This informed many of our decisions and now Morning Glory stands as a testament to the art of mobility; an innovative solution that sets it apart from traditional static structures.
Innovative Design:
Cookie-cutter Cape Cod and log cabin replicas dominate the lakefront. With Morning Glory, we wanted to bring a fresh perspective to the scene, seamlessly blending elegance with the rugged landscape. The thermally modified wood not only ensured longevity, but it also harmonized with its natural surroundings, becoming an integral part of the landscape rather than an imposition upon it. The flow of the materials and line and rise of the structures frame the environment as invitational rather than something to be dominated or avoided.
Thoughtful Planning
Before a single nail was hammered, meticulous planning took place to ensure Morning Glory was in perfect harmony with its environment and its purpose. We strategically positioned three distinct volumes to maximize views of Lake Michigan with every function carefully considered. We approach residences intended for retreat much different than normal residences because of the emphasis on community over efficiency. However we still wanted to make this a space that could serve a multi-family gathering and function to meet everyone’s unique needs. This attention to detail blurs the line between private retreat and communal gathering space, offering a sanctuary for both solitude and shared experiences.
Connection to Nature
At the heart of Morning Glory's design philosophy is a deep connection to nature. Large glass windows act as portals, framing the ever-changing landscape as though it were a living masterpiece. Whether you're inside or out, Morning Glory invites you to become part of the natural canvas that surrounds it—an immersive experience that transcends architecture. The three volumes appear to hang in the balance, understanding the tension of creating a new habitat for us to experience nature in a safe and comfortable way. Despite the seasonally harsh weather that batters this midwestern coastline, the materials and warm comfort within allow the property to be used year-round.
Function Meets Form
While Morning Glory's geometry may be subjective, its purpose is clear. Every angle, every line, serves to enhance the family’s ability to focus on nature and each other. The unique fenestration not only sets it apart from its neighbors but also maximizes comfort, community, and functionality, ensuring that every inch of space is purposefully designed. The communal spaces are positioned so those hoping to sleep and rest are separated from the noise of a late night gathering. The interior can seamlessly open up and flow into the exterior when the weather is ideal and the entertaining areas ensure efficiency and comfort regardless of whether there’s a large meal being prepped or there’s water to be enjoyed.
A Retreat from Ordinary
Morning Glory isn't an average project for us; it's a testament to the power of creativity in the face of challenges. By embracing the constraints of its environment, it has redefined what it means to live on the Michigan lakefront, offering a blueprint for sustainable, adaptable, and harmonious living. In a world where conformity is the norm, Morning Glory stands as a beacon of individuality, reminding us that true success lies in how we navigate and overcome the challenges that life presents.
